Project Description


The pavilion proposal for Lido Shores in Sarasota, Florida, offers a resilient, flexible space for community use—from quiet reflection to outdoor gatherings. Positioned along the coast, the project responded to significant environmental challenges, including the risk of flooding, material degradation from saltwater exposure, and the need to reflect the area’s coastal character.Inspired by a previous pavilion destroyed by hurricanes, the new design emphasizes durability, adaptability, and community engagement.

To mitigate flood risk, the pavilion was relocated to higher ground, connected to the original site by a wooden boardwalk. This raised position enhances safety while preserving the site's connection to the water. A central design element is the sculptural canopy, shaped with undulating members that mimic the rhythm of waves and coastal winds. It offers protection from harsh sun and rain while creating a dynamic architectural identity rooted in the natural environment.

The pavilion’s layout encourages both social interaction and quiet retreat. A continuous wrap-around bench forms a communal gathering area, while integrated privacy screens provide more intimate spaces. These screens also feature curated view portals that frame the surrounding landscape, inviting a deeper connection with nature.

Material selection played a key role in ensuring the pavilion’s longevity. Marine-grade materials and UV-resistant finishes were chosen to withstand corrosion, humidity, and sun exposure—critical concerns in Florida’s coastal climate. These durable, sustainable choices reinforce the project’s long-term resilience.

Overall, the proposal balances environmental responsiveness with community-centered design.It transforms a vulnerable coastal site into a lasting public asset, blending form and function in away that honors the landscape while fostering social and individual use. The new pavilion is envisioned not only as a shelter but as a landmark celebrating Lido Shores’ coastal identity and collective resilience.
