Project Description↓
The Indian Beach House in Sarasota, Florida, was designed in direct response to the challenges of its coastal setting. Located along the shoreline, the residence needed to address a tropical climate marked by high humidity, heavy rainfall, intense sun, and the threat of storms. These environmental factors influenced both the layout and material choices, ensuring a home that is resilient, sustainable, and comfortable year-round.
A key consideration in the design was the risk of flooding, common in the surrounding neighborhood. The design team studied base flood elevations and historical data to determine optimal site placement, elevation height, and drainage strategies. As a result, the home sits safely above flood-prone zones, with integrated site solutions that manage storm water effectively.
The layout of the house is organized along a central datum, which provides a clear spatial hierarchy. This organizational strategy establishes a gradual transition from public, shared spaces to more private, intimate areas, enhancing both functionality and privacy. Circulation paths were carefully designed to allow intuitive movement through the home, reinforcing the clarity of the architectural plan.
Operable screens were integrated throughout the design to offer flexibility in how the space responds to sunlight, wind, and views. These elements allow occupants to modulate light, ventilation, and privacy based on daily and seasonal changes. The design evolved through a layered and iterative process, with attention paid to plan, elevation, and sectional views to ensure cohesive integration.
Through its thoughtful material palette, programmatic clarity, and site-specific responsiveness, the Indian Beach House achieves a balance between beauty and performance. The result is a residence that not only meets the daily needs of its occupants but also respects and thrives within its dynamic coastal environment.
